Adding exercise to an inactive lifestyle seems to much more difficult for most than changing food intake. However, exercise is important to burn extra calories, add firmness to your body, and keep up your energy. That's right! Even though in the beginning you will feel exhausted after exercise, in the end it will make you feel more energetic as you progress.

There are ways to add exercise to your life without going to a gym or signing up for sports and that isn't time consuming.  We will list them below for you in order of least intense to most intense.  We recommend you begin at the beginning of the list.

  1. Listen to upbeat music while you do housework or even office work and work in general.  When people listen to music while doing other tasks they have a tendency to tap their feet, sing along, move rhythmically or quickly, or (if your like me) break dance at full throttle with the mop or broom.  This helps you to burn more calories than you would normally doing such tasks.
  2. Drink more water.  When you exercise your body becomes dehydrated, but did you know that some people gain weight when they aren't drinking enough water and lose it once they do?  It's true.  Your body will hold onto water in a very similar manner as the camel (you know the desert animal with the humps) if it feels you aren't getting enough.  If you drink enough water in a day your body will stop stock piling it.  There are side benefits to this as well.  Studies have shown that those who drink more water (or fluids in general) tend to have a better complexion, and rarely have dizzy spells or headaches in comparison to those who don't.  How do you know you're getting enough?  What you need depends on your size and the activities you do.  A general rule is that if your urine is yellow, than you are not getting enough to drink.  Those who drink enough will have clear urine. (gross but true)
  3. Hide/take the batteries out of/break the remote.  Remote control stereos and televisions have made us a tad on the lazy side.  Getting up to change the channel or adjust the volume, rewind and fast forward tapes (if anyone uses tapes anymore), is a good way to get rid of a few extra calories each day.
  4. Start doing ten sit-ups each morning when you get out of bed.  Sit ups pull your stomach in tight and help to make it look flatter.  It is best to start with a small number like ten then as your stomach grows in strength make gradual increases to the number (and even start doing them before bed as well).  Rap star 'Usher' recently attributed his fine physique (and I do mean fine!) to doing 200 sit-ups every day.  He probably broke this number up and did them in sets throughout the day, not all at once.
  5. Turn down the thermostat.  In the past, studies have shown that the colder it is where you do your exercise the more calories your burn.  This is because your body is also burning calories to stay warm as well as burning calories related to your activities.  Have common sense though.  If you have kids- don't freeze them out of the house and don't go sit in the snow naked!  There is a difference between playing it cool and getting hypothermia.
  6. ADULTS: have more SEX!!! That's right- I said it! Sex burns calories and it is something most of us do already and enjoy.  If you are the type that always takes bottom, change things up.  Start taking top, start putting a little more effort into it, and start doing it more often.  You will acheive more than just weight loss, but a satisfied husband, wife, or partner.
  7. Play with your kids, your dog, or someone else's kids (preferably someone else you know and wont call the police on you).  Many parents are busy, but not too busy to play with their kids.  Instead of playing Nintendo go outside and kick a much cheaper soccer ball around.  Play tag, hide and seek, or catch.  Even having a little wrestling match on the living room floor occasionally can help you burn calories.  AND the best part is that most kids never tire out before you so they will keep you going longer than you would if you were exercising alone.  A side benefit is that you will have a closer relationship with your children.
  8. If you live close to work (or the store, your friend's house, etc), walk or bike to work.  We're not saying you should (though you could!) do this everyday, even if you just do this on nice days when the birds are chirping, or on days when someone else in the family needs the car, you will burn calories and save the environment to boot.
  9. If you must have equipment to get you going, like a treadmill or stationary bicycle, set it up in front of the TV, and have your phone stationed within arms reach.  Most people do not enjoy exercise- at all. However if you can make the experience bearable by watching TV at the same time you will be less likely to give it up.  Having the phone within arms reach means that you will not have to pause your routine when the phone rings.  I personally have found myself answering the phone then after the conversation was over, not going back to my workout.  You can talk on the phone and exercise at the same time!
